The BMX dudes announced the winners of the BMX jams and comps, and we all chilled out. Some grey clouds came and we all ran away at the end of the day, just in time.

On Thursday the 16th of June and possibly Friday 17th of June the skatepark will be having grass seeds planted all around it.

This means it's unridable during working hours (9 - 5) as there will be contractors doing all the seeding. It's ridable in the evenings though.

During that time, try and stay off the soil areas for a bit as we want grass to grow around the park.

The day we've all been waiting for...

Today the skatepark is complete, and the barriers are down! And it's amazing. It's very different from a lot of other parks, with some distinguishing features such as the earthquake gap, rooftop / shed shape hip and grindbox and humongous bowl. And it's got a polejam.

After 4 years of campaigning, consulting, planning and designing, the skatepark is finally finished on Bass Recreation Ground, Derby.

As soon as the barriers were removed the park had over 50 skaters and BMXers on it... and some rollerbladers. There are still a few bits to be finished, like a pathway and a little more landscaping, but this should all be done over the next few weeks ready for the Official Opening event in July. (Date TBC)

We've been informed today that unfortunatly the park will not be ridable on the 25th May 2011. There has been a hold up with the contractors which means that they are approx. a week behind schedule.

Spray of the concrete has begun, forming the curves of the transitions around the park. We're in the final stages of the build now, and we've got word the park will be ridable on and after the 25th of May. We can't wait.

There will be a full opening Jam on the 9th of July to include skate and BMX comps, which will be awesome. More information coming soon on that though.

It's getting close to completion, but if you see anyone climbing the fence to ride it please discourage them as it's potentially dangerous and also could wreck parts of the construction that may not be able to be replaced due to £££. Look after the park!

A lot has happened in the last couple of weeks, the bowl has started to be dug, the quarter has taken form and the driveway has landed, you can really start to get the scale of it...

We've all been sweating with panic after the recent update on the project being slapped with a 66K over budget bill, and the possibility of losing the main areas of the park to compensate.

Quick recap: Options we faced were:

Good news though, after a meeting with the skatepark project Committee (Hooked, Rollersnakes, Mode and the Council) we agree that the options that were initially given to us (above) would be a disaster. We agreed that the Council would push for something much closer to our original design that we (all skaters / BMXers / lurkers in Derby) were all happy with.

The news is that we've got what we wanted and we'll only be losing the jump box strip at the bottom. The plan is now this:

All in all amazing news. Even better news, build starts next Monday: 21.02.2011

10 - 12 weeks later... park for Derby! Wooot. Tell all your friends!

On Thursday evening, Derby City Council contacted us all to let us know that there had been a change in cost to build the skatepark in Derby as we'd all seen.

What this meant is that the park we were all hoping was going to cost a total of £266k, that's £66k more than we have!

So, Derby City Council have been talking to Freestyle and they have suggested that we could afford one of these 2 options…

Option 1 - Bowl has been taken away

Option 2 - Main area of skatepark taken away

As you will see, neither of these are close to what we were hoping for or answers the need of all the users.

So, we told the Council how we felt about these options and this is the plan.

Derby City Council have been able to get more time for the funding to be spent (as originally, we had to have it spent by March 2011).

We are going to meet with the Council soon to discuss our options and see what we can make of this situation.

Although, these two options (above) are not what we hoped for, we are going to have to discuss these, so please reply/comment/Facebook/email us with your preference, option 1 or option 2.

Planning permission granted

Crack open that champagne, planning permission for the Derby Skatepark has been granted! We're so psyched, 3 years of work has finally come to fruition, and we can wait to get all the build shots on here as it happens.

By Summer we'll be riding it feeling the warm sun on our faces... just got to get through this winter! Stoked with the design too, thanks to Freestyle.

Decision time

Feeding back the feedback

So, we had a meeting tonight to discuss the findings of the feedback from the consultation. We prepared a document to present our thoughts on what definitely needs changing, what could be changed and what should definitely stay.

With a group of BMXers, Daz and Rob from Rollersnakes, the Council and us Hooked reps, we briefed John from Freestyle as to what needs to be done.

A SKATEBOARDING park in Derby city centre could deter anti-social behaviour and attract skaters from across the region, say planners.

A design workshop showcasing the planned park was held at Rollersnakes skating shop, in Mansfield Road, where scores of skateboarders and BMX enthusiasts gave their opinions.

The £200,000 skate park would be on Bass's Recreation Ground and would allow activities like skateboarding, rollerblading and BMX.

Darren Pearcy, team manager at the shop, said people currently have to travel outside Derby to use a skateboarding park.

He said: "We've got a growing BMX and skating scene in the city and a lot of people have to travel around to use good skate parks.

"There isn't a central location where people can socialise.

"But a skate park on Bass's Rec means it is central to everyone in Derby. It will be near the bus station and the train station so people can travel from outside the city to use the facility."

Rob Johnson, who also works at Rollersnakes, said that, instead of attracting anti-social behaviour, a skate park would deter it.

"Most cities in the country have one and they are very popular with young people," he said.

"It would deter anti-social behaviour because, for skaters, their main focus is to enjoy their hobby and to encourage each other.

"And if it is on the Bass's Rec, then it is an open area, meaning it won't attract the wrong people."

Becca Hall, a manager at local skating organisation Hooked, which is working on the plans with Derby City Council, said the plans had been almost three years in the making.

She said: "Derby is crying out for a skate park. This will be one so good that it won't just attract people from the city but from across the region.

"This means more tourism and more business for local hotels."

Tom Ball, 21, of Allestree, said he and his friends currently travel as far as Yorkshire to visit skate parks.

"There aren't that many amazing skate parks in Derby, so we go out to Sheffield, Leeds and Chesterfield to use ones there," he said.

"This one would be more accessible and it would definitely get used a lot."

Tom Wynne, 19, of Littleover, viewed the plans with friend Dan Brown, 20, of Findern.

"It's good for skaters to be recognised as a group and to be allowed to give input into the plans," said Tom.

Consultation is being undertaken over the next few weeks, with the intention of submitting the project for planning permission next month.

If planning permission is granted, then construction is due to start in December 2011.

Derby skatepark project: Consultation episode 1

The first design workshop happened at Quad today, with the Council, Rollersnakes and Hooked - as well as one of the design team from Freestyle to discuss the designs with the people.

Well the initial concepts were revealed to everyone, and we had some great thoughts and feedback. If you couldn't make it, here's what was discussed.

There were too many thoughts and ideas going round to chat about here, but once Wednesday's session is over, Freestyle will collate all the feedback and see what elements and ideas we're dealing with, and how they can be incorporated to get us the best park around. It's hard to please all user groups, as we all have different size wheels.

One thing to note is that the quality of Freestyle's finish came under question, and they'll be putting down a sample to check we're all happy with it. We don't want it to be too smooth like Chesterfield and Steve from Freestyle is more than happy to ensure we get a finish we're absolutely stoked on.

Keep your eyes peeled - remember your thoughts count, so get them heard by coming on wednesday to consultation number 2.

Consultation reminder

Here's the details for the design workshop. We'll be seeing the design for the park and having our say on what we can improve / add / take away. The designers and contractors will be there to run the workshop, and also Hooked and Rollersnakes to ensure it's a slick and professional process, with everyone's feedback being recorded.

So the designs from the companies that submitted an interest in building Derby's Skatepark are in.
They've thrown together some really awesome ideas. What happens now, is the best of the bunch will be available for your comment.

Get yourself to one of the consultation sessions held at QUAD or Rollersnakes to have your opinion heard.

We had a meeting tonight with the Council members who are managing the project. We mainly discussed how the project will pan out (tight deadlines) and how we'll be skating a Derby City skatepark this time next year.

The Council trust that between Hooked and Rollersnakes the most successful park will be built, and the best consultation with everyone concerned will happen. We're going to have a good park.

The expressions of interest have come back in and the Council are eliminating some skatepark contractors through varied criteria and our recommendations. It will then be a pitch for the remaining contractors to get us a design that fits our brief.

Then we'll be holding consultations to see what we want from the park and how we integrate everyone's ideas - this will be around September time.

Then after much working out and redesigning, the build will start after Christmas.

You might have seen the article in the local papers and the internet, and it's definitely happening.

There's no need to worry as Hooked and Rollersnakes will be involved in the whole process - you Derby skaters will be the client, Hooked and Rollersnakes will just ensure that the consultation and design process goes according to plan.

Initially after the bid for £1m was thrown out, we weren't sure whether to look for more funding, but as the money we've bagged already has to be spent by a certain date - we'll be using that only. Parks such as Mansfield were built with less than £200k so we're confident we're going to have a great park.

Bid Submission News : December Update

In September the 'Round 2' bid was submitted for the additional funding required for the Derby Skatepark Project. We were to find out before the end of December if we were successful with this additional funding.

Unfortunately, this particular bid has been unsuccessful. We found out the news today.

Although this is disappointing news, it's not too bad. The work that was required to be done for the 2 rounds of this bid means that we now have a great, solid document to present for other funding opportunities.

We will be meeting with the other team members to push this project forward in the New Year.

Well after months and months of research, form filling, meetings and document compiling - we've finally got the bid document finished and sent to The Big Lottery Fund. It went 2 days before the deadline to ensure it would make it in good time.

Now all we can do it await their decision - all in all we think it's a great opportunity and our concept of world class skatepark meets much much of the criteria on the bid requirements.

Bid Submission News

Last night we had a great meeting to discuss the Round 2 bidding process and welcomed Rollersnakes onto the park development team. A bid to secure the further funding is being drafted by all parties involved (Hooked, Rollersnakes and several departments of Derby City Council), compiled and ready for submission on 30th September 09! eeek

Round 2... ding ding

Round 2 has been successfully reached in the bidding process. What this means is that the 'Expression of Interest' that was submitted at Round 1 has been accepted and the project can now progress to apply for the bigger amount of money towards this project.

This is awesome news as the project is one step closer to being the epic park we all want, but we're up against 40 other projects so fingers crossed the funding peeps think our project is worth it!

Derby in Sidewalk mag

Cheers to Ben Powell for putting a mention in - it's true. At this stage based on consultation by Hooked and Council generosity, the Council are putting £200,000 towards a Derby City skatepark.

Now, we don't just want a £200,000 skatepark if we can help it, so we're just submitted a bid for a much larger amount of money to build a skatepark that will be not only regionally significant, but hopefully nationally.

We're looking for something different, something monumental, and something big.

Through this blog, Facebook and various other communications we're all going to be able to stay in the loop as to what's happening where, and how to get your ideas heard.

Nothing's going to move forward without you guys knowing about it.

Keep you eyes and ears to the ground, but if somethings happening, it will be on here.
